A Reaction: This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi

Updated: Jul 19, 2023

Tahereh Mafi is a distinguished world crafter and writer

*spoilers spoilers spoilers*

--------- I warned you ----------

Tahereh Mafi is one of my favourite writers and I hope to one day be able to craft worlds, characters, and sentences like hers.

I love how she has crafted Alizeh, the complexity of her character and the soundness of her personality, her eloquence and elegance, and her positivity and strength. Oh, and of course her banter, that’s on a whole new level. She addresses a king and a crown prince as if they’re your typical playground bullies. I love her.

Kamran, oh dear… Kamran.

The guy who notices everything we would only hope a guy would see.

[The These Infinite Threads-reading version of me has formed a slightly different opinion, but we'll have that conversation later.]

This is my second time reading it, and I remember from the first time that the beginning was quite long for me, with too little happening.

I retract that opinion now.

I love the slow burn because it displays Mafi’s ability to craft a world so extrinsically well. all her sentences matter, all her dialogue matters, and all the information she provides us in this story matters. All sentences move the plot forward and reveal something about the characters, it’s a story full of rising action.

The ending, however, felt like pure and complete chaos

the moment the dragon went through the roof, I couldn’t fully follow the scene anymore

it was too quickly… too much.

And moreover, I could not understand how an intelligent creation like Alizeh could give Hazan up so easily. and especially, in front of Kamran

but then again, we know more than she does

we know that Hazan is Kamran’s minister, while she doesn’t.

A lot was left to the end, with too little time to properly explain and work it all out effectively, maybe Mafi did this on purpose. It does keep you wanton for the next one, but in comparison with the rest of the book, all the secure crafting, it felt quite chaotic. I fully agreed with Kamran about this situation: Alizeh acted out of character. However, the Tulanian king was in control of it all and seemed to embody chaos, in my eyes. So, in that case, it was done perfectly. I did not like the Tulanian king, to be honest, he felt like pure evil to me.

Omid, the innocent and entertaining Omid, how much I love him.

And Hazan, the reincarnation of Kenji, if I properly remember him (it’s been a while since I’ve read Shatter Me) and Miss Huda… A friendship which we will hopefully continue to see blooming.

The banter between Alizeh and Kamran, her fearlessness in that tiny room.. it was amazing to see her so empowered and in control of that situation.. and then the kiss.. oh the kiss… Kamran was HOOKED.

Overall, I really really love this story, the world and character building of Mafi are phenomenal and even during a second reading it had me hooked once again. Reading this book is the experience of the magic of language, imagination, and creation. A world fully emerges from the pages, and Mafi makes it feel effortless and unpressured. Her writing supports the reader and takes them along on the book's journey without breaking the spell of reading.
